Statement from the Elders Board of CCCO concerning former pastor James Andrew Evans
The Elders Board of CCCO has become aware through CBC News reports that Ottawa police have laid charges against a former pastor, James Andrew Evans, who served as the English Pastor of CCCO from September 2001 to the end of May 2005. According to those reports, the allegations involve historical sexual offences relating to minors. We do not know whether the alleged offences occurred during his time of employment with CCCO.
These reported allegations are deeply concerning. We recognize that news of this nature may be distressing for many people, particularly for individuals who have experienced abuse, trauma, or misconduct. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who may be affected.
As this matter is now before the criminal justice system, we believe it is important that the legal process be allowed to proceed fairly and independently. Out of respect for that process, we will not comment on the allegations, the investigation, or matters that may become subject to court proceedings.
We are prepared to fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities as the laid charges proceed through courts.
The safety, well-being, and protection of each and every one at the church, particularly children, youth, and vulnerable persons remain of the highest importance to our church. We hold high ethical standard to all of our pastoral staffs, leaders and volunteers. We are committed to maintaining and strengthening policies, practices, screening procedures, and accountability measures designed to provide a safe environment for all who participate in our ministries.
We urge anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation to contact the Ottawa police directly. We also encourage anyone affected by this news to seek appropriate support and care.
As a Christian community, we remain committed to truth, justice, compassion, and care for those who are hurting. We continue to pray for all who may be affected, for wisdom and integrity throughout the investigative and judicial process, and for healing where there has been pain.
